The World Language Department prepares students for the broader world through instruction in French and Spanish. Classes combine language learning with exploration of cultural practices and traditions from Spanish-speaking and Francophone countries. From PreK-3 through 7th grade, students build vocabulary, phrases, and basic conversational skills through songs, games, and interactive activities. The program fosters a love of language and culture, inspiring curiosity and a deeper understanding of the world around them.
French at HNJ
Our French program inspires students to fall in love with learning a new language while building confidence and cultural awareness. Classes emphasize oral participation and fun activities that introduce students to French language and culture, laying a strong foundation for future language skills.
Early Childhood (PK3–Kindergarten)
Young learners explore French through songs, stories, videos, and hands-on activities. Weekly participation encourages confidence and enthusiasm for speaking a new language in a joyful, engaging environment.
Lower School (1st–3rd Grade)
Students learn high-frequency vocabulary and basic expressions, gradually forming sentences and practicing pronunciation. French culture is woven into lessons, allowing students to explore what makes France and other francophone countries unique.
Middle School Elective
This fast-paced elective focuses on basic vocabulary and expressions while immersing students in French culture. Activities include exploring French films and hands-on cooking experiences, giving students a taste of France’s rich history and traditions.
Spanish at HNJ
Spanish is offered for students in grades 4–7, with classes held every other day throughout the school year. Instruction focuses on conversation, grammar, geography, and cultural traditions, with special celebrations during Hispanic Heritage Month, Day of the Dead, and the winter holidays.
Grades 4–5
Students learn greetings, introductions, classroom phrases, and basic grammar. They explore the 21 Spanish-speaking countries and their traditions through short projects, dialogues, and interactive games that reinforce vocabulary and grammar.
Grades 6–7
Classes prepare students for high school Spanish with continued conversation practice, study of regular and irregular verbs, and more advanced grammar. Projects include building Day of the Dead ofrendas, designing a food truck, and researching country histories, allowing students to apply language skills in meaningful, creative ways.
